Film screenings Taiwan's Lost Commercial Cinema – Forgotten Movie Masterpieces

Regular filmmaking on Taiwan started in 1950s and between 1955 and 1979 at least 1114 Taiwanese-language films were made. Because of tight budgets, lack of archive and the companies short-lived only 200 films survive to this day. Many of the surviving films were recovered and restored, now are available for viewers. Organizers King's College of London and Taiwan Film Institute of Taiyupian Screening Tour selected 9 pieces which represent the historical and generic range of Taiwanese-language cinema. Taiwan Studies Centre of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow joined the project of popularization Taiwanese-language commercial cinema and organise course Taiwan's Lost Commercial Cinema – Forgotten Movie Masterpieces held by Agnieszka Mikrut-Żaczkiewicz, Ph.D. with the participation of prof. Chris Berry (King's Colledge of London). During the course students watch 7 selected films, including Fantasy of The Deer Warrior (1961, dir. Chang Yin), Brother Wang and Brother Liu Tour Taiwan (1958, dir. Li Xing). The aim of the course is to provide students with a general overview of the basic themes and issues in Taiwanese-language cinema. Students will discuss how the cinema resemble and affect society as well as its political and social significance.
